Hyundai Genuine to supply 439 forklifts to North American dealer Thomson Tractor (현대제뉴인, 톰슨사에 지게차 439대 판매…북미 공략 박차)

현대중공업그룹의 건설기계부문 지주사인 현대제뉴인이 산업차량(지게차) 시장 규모 2위인 북미 시장 공략에 박차를 가하고 있다.

South Korea's Hyundai Genuine Co., an intermediate holding unit overseeing construction equipment and machinery business under Hyundai Heavy Industries, has clinched a deal to supply 439 units of its forklifts to U.S. construction equipment dealer Thompson Tractor Company.

현대제뉴인은 북미 건설장비 딜러사인 톰슨트랙터컴퍼니(톰슨)와 소형 329대·중형 42대·전동 63대 등 지게차 총 439대에 대한 공급계약을 체결했다고 15일 밝혔다. 현대제뉴인은 오는 6월부터 순차적으로 계약한 지게차를 인도할 계획으로, 장비들은 미국 동남부 조지아주에 있는 공장과 물류창고 등에 투입될 예정이다.

Under the deal, Hyundai Genuine will supply 329 small-sized, 42 mid-sized and 63 electric forklifts to factories and logistics centers in Georgia from June, the company said Tuesday.

톰슨사는 1957년 사업을 시작해 미국 조지아와 앨라배마, 플로리다 등에서 굴착기와 지게차를 대여·판매한다.

Thompson Tractor started forklift and excavator sale and rental business in 1957 and now operates in Georgia, Alabama and Florida.

현대제뉴인은 이번 계약을 포함해 북미 시장에서 올해 1∼2월 작년 같은 기간과 비교해 300% 증가한 2천282대의 지게차를 수주했다. 현재 이 지역에서만 5천300여 대의 주문 잔량을 보유하고 있다.

With the latest addition, Hyundai Genuine has won forklift orders for total 2,282 units from North America in January and February, soaring 300 percent from a year ago-period. Its order backlog in the region now reaches about 5,300 units.

이에 따라 현대제뉴인의 올해 2월 북미 지게차 시장 점유율은 작년 상반기 평균 대비 3.2%포인트 상승한 5.9%를 기록했다. 북미 지역은 전 세계 지게차 시장의 19%를 차지한다.

Hyundai Genuine in February claimed a 5.9 percent share in the North American forklift market, up 3.2 percentage points from the average share for the first half of last year. North America was behind 19 percent of the world's forklift demand.

현대제뉴인은 북미 시장 공략을 위해 미국 내 대형 딜러사인 톰슨사를 자사 메인 딜러사로 전환해 미국 동남부 지역 판매망을 확충했고, 별도 애프터서비스(AS)팀을 신설해 미국 내 서비스도 강화했다고 설명했다.

The Korean company has converted Thompson Tractor into its main dealer to secure sales network in the southeast region of the U.S. It also formed a separate follow-up service team to strengthen service for equipment users.

앞서 현대제뉴인은 올해 1월부로 자회사인 현대건설기계로부터 지게차 사업을 인수한 바 있다. 현대제뉴인 관계자는 "올해부터 지게차 사업을 본격적으로 시작한 만큼 수소, 무인 지게차 등 미래 기술에 집중 투자해 경쟁력을 더욱 강화하겠다"고 말했다.

Hyundai Genuine acquired the forklift business of its subsidiary Hyundai Construction Equipment in January. Starting the business, the company now is planning to invest more in future technologies for hydrogen-fueled models and unmanned vehicles for better competitiveness.
