셰익스피어의 4대 비극

 

Many people think that Romeo and Juliet is one of the 4 tragedies of Shakespeare. However, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, and King Lear are the 4 tragedies. Tragedies are caused by the character of each of the main characters. Hamlet's indecisiveness, Macbeth's too great ambitions, Othello's suspicious mind, and King Lear's hot temper all led to a tragedy.

흔히 사람들은 Romeo and Juliet이 셰익스피어의 4대 비극 중 하나라고 생각한다. 그러나 Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear가 셰익스피어의 4대 비극이다. 비극은 주인공의 성격으로 인해 발생하는데, Romeo and Juliet은 가문의 싸움이 비극의 원인이기 때문이다. 햄릿은 우유부단한 성격, 맥베스는 지나친 야심, 오셸로는 남을 의심하는 성격, 그리고 리어 왕은 불같은 성격 때문에 비극이 일어난다.

suspects that his uncle poisoned the King as he marries his mother and succeeds to the throne. However, 4)due to his indecisiveness, he

5)keeps delaying his revenge. In the end, Ophelia kills 6)herself, and Hamlet 7)himself is killed with a poisoned dagger.

 

덴마크 왕자 햄릿은 유학 중에 부왕이 돌연사를 했다는 소식을 듣고 귀국한다. 그는 숙부가 어머니와 결혼 한 후 왕위에 오르자, 아버지가 숙부에게 독살된 것이 아닌가 하고 의심한다. 그러나 우유부단한 그는 복수를 차일피일 미룬다. 결국 연인 오필리어는 자살하고 햄릿 자신도 독이 묻은 칼에 찔려 죽는다.

 

1)Believing the three witches 2)who said "You will become king," Macbeth kills King Duncan and takes the throne, but eventually he is murdered by his opponents.3) Although he has thought no one can defeat him because a ghost said that none born of a woman would kill him, he is killed by Macduff. What happened was that Macduff wasn't born of a woman because he was cut out of her womb early.

 

맥베스는 자신이 왕이 된다는 마녀들의 예언에 성급하게 스코틀랜드의 덩컨 왕을 시해하고 왕위에 올랐다가 반대파들의 칼에 목숨을 잃는다. 그는 여성이 낳은 자는 자기를 죽일 수 없다는 마녀들의 예언을 믿고 스스로 불사의 몸으로 여기다가 결국 맥더프의 칼에 죽는다. 맥더프는 제왕절개 수술로 태어났기 때문에 여성이 낳은 사람이 아니었던 것이다.

 

Othello, the Moor of Venice, doesn't trust his wife. 1)Blinded by jealousy, he kills her and kills himself. King Lear 2)asks his three daughters a question 3)to test 4)how much they love him. He gives everything to his first and second daughters then they lie about their love for him. But he orders his youngest daughter Cordelia, 5)who has answered honestly, to leave the country6), thinking she does not love him. However, when he is rejected by his wicked first and second daughters, he regrets his foolishness. And he is taken care of by Cordelia5)

, who has become queen of France.

 

무어 장군 오셸로는 아내 데스데모나를 믿지 못하고, 질투에 눈이 멀어 자기 아내를 죽인 후 자살한다. 리어 왕은 세 딸의 효심을 알아보기 위한 질문을 한다. 그는 달콤한 감언이설로 자기를 구슬리는 첫째 딸과 둘째 딸에게 모든 것을 물려주고, 아부하지 않고 솔직하게 대답한 막내딸 코델리아를 불효자식이라고 생각하여 추방한다. 그러나 그는 변심한 첫째 딸과 둘째 딸에게 구박받고 자신의 어리석음을 후회하며, 프랑스의 왕비가 된 막내딸에게 노후를 맡기게 된다.
